IanMJonesPhotoIan M. Jones, of Lexington, South Carolina, has won the wind ensemble category for the Azusa Pacific University/J.W.Pepper High School Composition Contest, with his composition Combine and Create.

A percussionist for 7 years, he is a junior at River Bluff High School. He has also recently won the NAfME Student Composers Competition. Combine and Create was inspired mainly by Mr. Jones’ favorite piece of music, Steven Bryant’s Concerto for Wind Ensemble. The entire work was derived out of the first five notes heard in the opening clarinet solo. The composition took 2 or 3 weeks to create.

Each of the 2016 winners receives a $1000 cash prize, a recorded live performance by an Azusa Pacific University ensemble or performer, consideration for publication by J.W.Pepper, and a 1 year membership in J.W.Pepper’s My Score™ service.
